Community Associations Institute the international center for community association best practices, learning, and advocacy, is proud to announce it has surpassed 44,000 members worldwide, the highest level in the organization's 50-year history.
Founded in 1973, CAI was organized through the joint efforts of the Urban Land Institute, National Association of Homebuilders, the U.S. League of Savings and Loan Associations, the Veterans Administration, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 23 builder/developers, and several leading community association professionals. Today, in collaboration with 64 chapters in the U.S., Canada, Middle East, and South Africa, as well as with housing leaders in Australia, United Kingdom, and a number of countries, CAI supports the millions of people living and working in condominiums, housing cooperatives, and homeowners associations.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, CAI membership peaked at 43,897 members before dropping 5% by the end of 2020. Since January 2021, the organization has seen significant growth with roughly 850 new members per month and an 84% retention rate.
“CAI's remarkable membership growth is a direct correlation of our leadership and staff's commitment to supporting our members, recognizing and implementing new ways to serve them, and better understanding the future of the community association housing model," says Thomas M. Skiba, CAE, CAI's chief executive officer. “While many associations were trimming staff and developing new ways to diversify their revenue streams over the past few years, we were able to keep our employees and deliver critical content and resources to our members, lawmakers, and the public challenged with navigating the pandemic in condominium communities, housing cooperatives, and homeowners associations."
CAI provides information, education, and resources to the homeowner volunteers who govern communities and the professionals who support them. CAI members include condominium and homeowners association board members, residents, community managers, association management firms, and other professionals who provide products and services to associations.
